Conserving Sha Lo Tung

Reimagining the Future of Hong Kong’s Freshwater Wetlands

About Sha Lo Tung

One of Hong Kong’s Most Ecologically Valuable Freshwater Wetlands

Located in a valley in Tai Po, Sha Lo Tung is one of Hong Kong’s few remaining inland freshwater wetlands, known for its rich ecological resources.
The 56-hectare area is shaped by converging streams, alluvial soils, and surrounding hills, forming a variety of habitats and wetland systems that offer ideal breeding grounds for dragonflies and other insects.
Its streams and riparian zones have been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), ranking just below Mai Po in ecological importance. Sha Lo Tung is often celebrated as Hong Kong’s “dragonfly paradise.”

Conservation Vision

With support from the EEB’s Countryside Conservation Funding Scheme (CCFS), SIEW Lab will collaborate with Green Power to build upon and expand existing conservation efforts.

The project aims to develop a new spatial vision for the entire 56-hectare area of Sha Lo Tung, transforming it into an insect-themed ecological park that integrates nature conservation with multiple ecological services—including scientific research, recreation, public education, and eco-agriculture.

The team will engage experts across disciplines to carry out the project through three key components: interdisciplinary baseline research, facility and concept planning, and public engagement with knowledge translation.
Special emphasis will be placed on the use of scientific data and the incorporation of AR/VR technologies to enhance public outreach and visualise the long-term vision for the site.

Our project encompasses habitat protection, native planting, and ecosystem restoration, aiming to create an environmentally friendly and ecologically rich landscape.

Inspire Learning

Through education and hands-on experiences, we empower the public to care for and take part in conserving our natural environment.

Enhance ecological balance

Insects are an essential part of the ecosystem, and we are committed to protecting and studying the unique insect species found in Hong Kong’s Sha Lo Tung area.
Through our insect conservation programme, we aim to raise public awareness of insect ecology and highlight the importance of insect conservation.
